Some 1,000 women joined the BJP during a programme at Upper Mawprem here on Friday.
This took place in the presence of Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar, BJP state president and West Shillong hopeful Ernest Mawrie and cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai.
Chandrasekhar welcomed the new members into the BJP fold and urged them to be participants in the process of development and to strengthen the hand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
With a President who is the first female tribal to hold the post and a PM from a “humble” background, the government at the Centre “understands the difficulties faced by the common man and is therefore committed to the spirit of ‘seva’ (service),” he said.
The minister further said that it is only a so-called ‘double engine’ government of the BJP at the Centre and also in the state that can provide a “new dimension to growth and the best opportunities for the people of this state to move up in the development index.”
Mawrie and Shullai also spoke on the occasion and welcomed the joinees. They were unanimous in thanking the women for reposing their trust in the BJP and assured them that together they would build a better Meghalaya.
