East Khasi Hills police arrested one accused involved in the assault of a city cricketer, Lakhan Singh near Anjalee Cinema.
Police have not revealed the name of the accused.
Singh, a resident of Harijan Colony at Them Ïew Mawlong, is a Ranji Trophy player selected for a tournament in Jaipur.
As per a FIR lodged at the Cantonment Beat House, on October 4 Singh was on his way to Jhalupara from his residence by two-wheeler when he was told to stop by a man who overtook him in a car near Anjalee Cinema and thereafter grievously assaulted by a group of miscreants at around 9:20 pm.
In the FIR, he identified the car’s licence plate as ML 05 AA 0381. Several people then came out of the car and assaulted him, including by striking him in the face, and also threatened him with dire consequences.
Superintendent of Police (City), Vivek Syiem said a case has been registered at the Sadar PS under sections 325/341/506/34 IPC.
He said the arrested accused is being produced in court after police custody as efforts are on to nab the others involved.
