Khliehriat, Oct 15: East Jaintia Hills celebrated the World White Cane Safety Day today by organising a friendly football match for visually impaired players from various districts across Meghalaya.
The event was organised by the Ephatha Society, an NGO in the district dedicated to the welfare of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) supported by the office of the Deputy Commissioner and the District Sports Officer (DSO).
World White Cane Safety Day is to raise community awareness about the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals and to highlight the importance of the white cane as a symbol of independence, mobility, self-reliance and to foster understanding and encourage communities to build a more inclusive society for persons with visual disabilities.
Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO)-Sadar M. Kumar in his speech said the event is an inspiring platform showcasing the exceptional talent and motivation of individuals with special abilities and their participation stood as a reminder that challenges can be overcome through determination and resilience.
He said the State government and the district administration is committed to building an inclusive society and continues to extend its support to ensure the growth and development of every individual.
Ephatha Society President Emlangmi Sapuh said that the friendly football match will serve as an important platform to raise awareness and promote understanding that even individuals with visual impairments possess unique talents and abilities in sports and various aspects of life.
