Birin Nuchong Secondary School in Ampati, South West Garo Hills, observed World No Tobacco Day on the theme ‘Exposing Lies, Protecting Lives: Unmask the Appeal of Tobacco and Nicotine Products’.
The event, held on May 29, aimed to raise awareness about the deceptive tactics used by the tobacco industry and to promote healthy, tobacco-free lifestyles among the youth.
Organised in collaboration with the district Health Department, the day featured a series of engaging and educational activities, including dental and oral screening, quiz competitions on tobacco awareness, painting and slogan writing contests and a 100 metre race. Winners of the competitions were awarded prizes.
Dr Cornelius R Marak delivered the keynote address, focusing on the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and highlighting the importance of unmasking the tobacco industry’s marketing tactics. He elaborated on the ill effects of tobacco and nicotine products, especially on youth and urged everyone to remain vigilant against misleading advertisements.
