Shillong, Jun 5: The Governor of Meghalaya has approved the regulations regarding the list of VIPs who could use name plate in their official cars. As per the regulations, none of them have any right to use siren, beacon and tinted glass.
According to the Display of Name Boards on Motor Vehicles (Regulations) 2026 which got the assent of the Governor, only 14 categories of VIPs are allowed to use the name plate in their official vehicle.
The background of the name plate should be red in colour and the size should be 50 cm x 15 cm.
The VIPs allowed to use the name plate under this law are the Governor, vehicles assigned to Lok Bhavan, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Cabinet Minister, Chief Justice, Judges, Registrar General, Registrars of the High Court, District & Sessions Judges, Additional District & Sessions Judges, Special Judges presiding over POCSO/NDPS/MACT/ land acquisition courts and Chief Judicial Magistrates, Member Secretary of the Meghalaya Legal Services Authority/Director, Meghalaya State Judicial Academy/ Secretary District Legal Services Authority, Speaker, Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assembly, Chief Executive Member, Deputy Chief Executive Member, Chairman, Deputy Chairman of the Autonomous District Councils, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force (HoFF), Meghalaya/Officers in the rank of Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Additional Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Executive Magistrate, Assistant Commissioner, Heads of Departments/Directorates in the state government, Chairperson/Member/Secretary of a Constitutional authority and Central Statutory Bodies, Central Government Statutory Body/Commission/Authority, Chairperson/Member/Secretary of a State Government Statutory Body/Commission/Authority, Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor and Registrar of Central/State Government Universities.
According to the notification, no motor vehicle other than those specified shall exhibit any boards without permission of the Transport Department.
Additionally, if the VIP is not travelling in the vehicle, the board shall be removed or covered.
As these regulations take effect, the focus remains on promoting responsible conduct among state officials.
