In a massive bust, West Garo Hills police today seized an amount of 6.77 tonnes of cannabis that was allegedly being stocked in the house of a resident of Koylaghat, near Phulbari Police Station, in the district.
The recovery late last night then led to the arrest of the person in whose house the massive stock was found while the homeowner managed to evade the police.
According to reports, the raid on the house of one Fozial Sheikh (the owner) was based on inputs of the presence of a huge stock of cannabis in the village of Nimaikata (Koylaghat), Phulbari. Upon raiding the house, police recovered the cannabis while also arresting Saddiq Ali (a resident of Fakirganj, Assam) from the house.
It was also found that Sheikh was growing cannabis plants on the premises.
“This is a criminal offence and appropriate legal action is being taken. A case has been registered at Phulbari PS under section 20(b)/25/29 of the NDPS Act. The house owner is currently absconding and we are searching for him,” stated Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh.
The seized plants were later destroyed by the police.
