The newly floated Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) will unveil its election symbol on January 21 at a public meeting at Smit under Nongkrem constituency.
The free symbol was allotted to VPP by the Election Commission in order to enable the party to contest the February 27 Assembly elections.
VPP is registered with the Election Commission although it is yet to be a recognised State party.
To get recognition and a permanent symbol, a party has either to secure at least six per cent of the valid votes and win at least two seats in the upcoming Assembly elections or secure at least three per cent of the valid votes or win at least three seats in the Assembly elections.
The VPP has announced 16 candidates for the elections. The list includes party president and former MLA Ardent M. Basaiawmoit (Nongkrem) and sitting MLA Adelbert Nongrum (North Shillong).
