The Voice of the People Party (VPP) organised a one day workshop on the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for all of the party’s MDC candidates for the upcoming district council elections.
Batskhem Myrboh, VPP spokesperson and an assistant professor of political science, was the resource person. During the workshop, participants were sensitised with the historical background of the Sixth Schedule, the inadequacy of the schedule as an autonomy provision which led to the Hill State Movement and the formation of Meghalaya as a separate state.
The discussion also centred on the specific contexts of the autonomous district councils in Meghalaya post-statehood. Discussions followed involving the participants, who included lawyers, historians and others with diverse backgrounds.
