Editor,
I am writing to express my strongest condemnation of the recent brutal assault on Dr. Alok Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. Such violence within an academic institution is not only unacceptable, it is deeply disturbing and strikes at the heart of what universities are meant to represent — dialogue, inquiry, and respect.
The fact that this assault allegedly involved student leaders makes it all the more alarming. Universities must be safe spaces for educators and students alike, where disagreement is addressed through reason, not intimidation.
In light of the gravity of this incident, I urge the authorities to provide immediate police protection preferably by a Central Armed Police Force at the University. Furthermore, there must be an impartial and independent investigation by a neutral third party — entirely free from internal university or political influence — to uncover the root cause of this incident. It is essential to determine who or what forces are attempting to derail the peace and academic integrity of NEHU.
I stand in solidarity with Dr. Singh and call upon both the university administration and government authorities to act swiftly, transparently, and decisively to bring justice and ensure that such appalling acts are never repeated.
