The Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement, (HANM) today halted the ongoing construction of a road project at Bakhlapara village by Assam, insisting that the land on which they were building the road falls on Ri Bhoi’s side of the border.
According to the western unit of the organisation, the village falls under the jurisdiction of Raid Warmawsaw-Umsohbar of Hima Nongspung.
Members of the HANM led by unit president, Sumar Lyngdoh and elders of the Raid who visited the village said that Assam has encroached into Meghalaya and constructed the road without a consultation with the State government.
Lyngdoh told reporters that such an act by the neighbouring state is not welcomed as the border talks are ongoing. He also said that the Meghalaya government should take immediate action to halt the construction of road projects by the Assam government; otherwise they will be forced to act.
Members of Raid Warmawsaw-Umsohbar said that the area where the road project was under its jurisdiction since time immemorial and Assam has encroached upon Meghalaya’s land by pumping in developmental projects.
