United Democratic Party (UDP) will support Draupadi Murmu for President of India when the election is held next month, party president and Speaker of the Assembly Metbah Lyngdoh said today.

Murmu would be the first tribal to ever be elected as President of the country. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Lyngdoh said that the party is of the opinion that it is time for a tribal person to occupy the highest constitutional post in the nation.

“This is the time we all have to come together and I’m sure that people in the plains will also go for the tribal candidate. We hope that the candidate we have endorsed will stay true and occupy the top post,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lyngdoh said that the UDP is aiming to reach out to every corner of the state to try and win as many seats as possible in next year’s state elections.

“All senior leaders of the party and people at the grassroots level are supporting us and they are with us. We will continue to work very hard,” he said.

The UDP is the biggest regional party in the Assembly with eight MLAs but is only third overall, behind the National People’s Party and Trinamool Congress.

“We will not talk big about any party but will only say that the people should decide. Our duty is to ensure we reach every nook and corner of the state and create awareness in the people,” Lyngdoh said.
