In pursuance of the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCCoRS), the Meghalaya government has announced road safety targets for 2025.
To achieve the stringent target of a 10 per cent reduction in both road accidents and fatalities compared to the preceding year, the Transport Department will undertake several measures.
These include enhanced enforcement of traffic rules and regulations, including speed limits, driving under the influence of alcohol and adherence to lane discipline. Road infrastructure will be improved, including the identification and rectification of black spots, installation of proper signage and enhancement of road markings.
Intensified public awareness campaigns focusing on road safety education, responsible driving practices and the importance of adhering to traffic rules will be launched. Stricter driver training and licensing procedures will be introduced, including refresher courses for commercial vehicle drivers and the promotion of defensive driving techniques.
Advanced technologies for traffic management will be implemented, including electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety. The Transport Department will also work closely with other relevant departments, agencies and stakeholders, including the police, Public Works Department and NGOs. Emergency response systems will be enhanced to ensure prompt medical assistance to accident victims.
Rigorous data analysis and monitoring of accident trends will be used to identify critical areas and implement targeted interventions. Quarterly reports on the enforcement activities and actions taken under this directive shall be submitted to the Transport Department/Commissioner Transport.
All concerned departments, agencies and stakeholders have been directed by the government to extend their full cooperation and support in achieving this critical target.
