Shillong, May 16: A training program on backyard poultry farming management was recently organized by ICAR-KVK in Rimrangpara village, to enhance the skills and knowledge of farmer on achieving higher egg and meat production.
The KVK said poultry production in Garo Hills region mainly relies on indigenous chicken breeds, which exhibit poor genetic potential for egg and meat production. These local chickens can produce only 30 to 50 eggs per year with low body weight gain. Given the low-cost nature of backyard farming, which thrives on minimal external inputs, there exists a significant opportunity to enhance productivity through the introduction of superior chicken varieties.
The program was attended by around 40 livestock farmers.
Dr. Sagarika Borah, ACTO (Animal Science) of KVK, West Garo Hills underscored the potential of small-scale poultry production as an income-diversifying endeavour for women.
The training also highlighted improved poultry breeds such as Kuroiler, Vanaraja, Kamrupa, Srinidhi, and Grampriya, recognised for their higher growth rates and egg production capabilities. Participants were provided with mineral mixtures for animal and poultry feeding to enhance their farming practices.
