The Congress party’s statement that regular traffic jams in Shillong are taking a toll on commuters is truly justified and especially where time is a deciding factor between life and death.
Such political statements will keep on coming whichever party is in government or opposition but what we require are a series of viable options to reduce traffic jams and the political will power to act.
Reducing traffic movement is no solution. Even blocking roads is more of a hindrance rather than a convenience. We require decisions like limiting commercial vehicle permits, or having an odd and even transport system and maybe giving a transport subsidy to commercial and private car owners who have vehicles more than ten years old. The effect is reduction in pollution levels and reduction of heavy traffic movement.
I suggest that the so-called VIPs who are actually public servants should arrive at their destinations ahead of time and not just poke into every space on the congested roads, throwing others off the grid. These measures whether you like it or not have to be dealt with firmly.
