Intensifying its attack on the National People’s Party (NPP) and its allies in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien criticised them for being in league with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Addressing a press conference here today after unveiling the TMC election song here at the party’s offices, O’Brien accused them of singing one tune in Meghalaya but quite another one when they visit New Delhi.
He also said that there is a need to go through the speeches of some of the parties here in Meghalaya during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
“We are clear, either in Meghalaya or anywhere, that the BJP is bad for the country for the one reason that they don’t honour the Constitution,” he added.
Pledging that the TMC will never align itself with the BJP or its proxies, O’Brien was clear in saying that his party is serious about its chances in Meghalaya.
Although the Congress Party is also opposed to the BJP, the TMC leader pointed to Goa where many of them jumped ship after the election and joined the BJP. Ironically, all of the TMC’s MLAs in Meghalaya defected from the Congress in 2021.
Meanwhile, he also dismissed the idea that the TMC is a Bengali party, stating that all its candidates here represent all Meghalayans.
Echoing similar views, TMC state president Charles Pyngope said that the Bengali tag is nothing but a ploy cooked up by rival political parties as they have no other ammunition against the TMC.
