The squabbling between the United Democratic Party (UDP) and National People’s Party (NPP) for the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has been settled.
United Democratic Party’s (UDP) three-time MDC from Sohra Titosstarwell Chyne has been elected as the opposition leader today.
The opposition grouping with 12 members consisting of the UDP (5), National People’s Party (4), two independents and Hills State People’s Democratic Party had yesterday submitted a joint letter to KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana, informing him of their decision to elect Chyne as the opposition leader.
Meanwhile, Chyne told reporters that the group understands that while they sit in the opposition there should be unity among them. “Since going our own way will look stupid in front of the public,” he said.
He also informed that there is no binding from the political parties the member represents. “We leave aside party work, here we have come as MDCs in the district council as elected by the public and we have christened it as Synrop Liang Iatei,” Chyne said.
He said that the opposition MDCs have agreed that he will be its leader and Grace Mary Kharpuri has been elected as its Secretary.
Chyne said that he and Kharpuri met and both came to an understanding that there should not be any rift.
