The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) inspected Public Health Engineering Department sites after water supplies were disrupted in Shillong over the weekend.
Despite many years since the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme has been instituted, there are still many areas within the capital city that do not receive regular water supply.
Pipes and other paraphernalia connected with water infrastructure have also just been lying around PHE sites in Upper Shillong and elsewhere for years, leading to many questions about the state of affairs in the department.
“PHE as a department has been for too long a non-transparent department,” the CSWO said in a release. “It is high time that the department is audited by the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) and the citizens, for the wastage of public funds while citizens face water crisis. It is incumbent on us citizens facing water crisis to conduct a social audit of the PHE Department for all schemes both completed and ongoing. Let us start questioning those in power who represent us.”
