Three persons from Meghalaya were among nine arrested by the Goa crime branch police today for running a fake call centre that was involved in cheating citizens of the United States.
According to reports, the police conducted a raid on an illegal call centre at Majorda, Salcete in South Goa.
Reports also said that during the raid, police arrested nine persons and seized nine laptops with headphones, three routers, two modems, nine mobile phones, along with all accessories, cables and cash of Rs 65,000 — all valued at Rs 15 lakh.
The arrested persons from Meghalaya are identified as Akash Biswa (26) Akash Sunar (23) and Ajay Biswa (25).
The others who were also nabbed during the raid are identified as Vinayakwana Makhwana (32) of Ahmedabad, Gujarat; Ghachi Alfarz (28) of Gujarat; Kesang Tamang of West Bengal; Rahul Sarsar (29) of Mumbai; Tanmoy Dasgupta (20) of Assam; and Rehan Shaikh (27) of Mumbai- Maharashtra.
Police said that all these accused persons set up the fake illegal call centre and procured personal details of citizens of the United States through X-lite app. By using laptops resources and Virtual Private Network (VPN), they contacted the victims through an active voice response system by impersonating a bank loan official of the United States and convinced the victims that they were officials of a US bank and offered them a loan facility.
Further, the accused persons told the US victims, whose credit score was low, to pay a fine/penalty in the form of electronic payment and looted the money by converting it into Indian currency.
