Tension flared up during the election campaign of the NPP at Umsning today.
The incident unfolded as NPP Lok Sabha election candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh was canvassing in the election campaign.
At approximately 5 pm, in the middle of Lyngdoh’s speech, some people arrived and began shouting the slogan ‘Ha U Prah’, the symbol of VPP.
Infuriated by this, Lyngdoh asked the slogan shouters to move out and not disturb the NPP meeting.
KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem who also spoke at the meeting asked the police to arrest the slogan shouters.
“Police officers please take action,” Syiem shouted. He also accused the slogan shouters of being infected by a “virus from West Bengal”.
Later, there was a clash between supporters of the NPP and the slogan shouters prompting police intervention to restore order.
Video clips of the incident showed that some of the slogan shouters were also assaulted by some persons.
The slogan shouters were subsequently taken to the Umsning Police Station in an effort to defuse tension.
However, sources said that the slogan shouters were not members of any political party and were drunk.
The incident occurring just days before the Lok Sabha Election scheduled for April 19 underscored the unexpected challenges faced during poll campaign activities.
