Two teenage girls drowned in a Sunday swimming trip that went tragically wrong at Wahsiej village today.
The two victims were identified as Shabakmenlang Wanniang (16) and Aishabankmen Thongni (14), both residents of Wahsiej in South West Khasi Hills.
They and two friends had gone swimming in the Braimirit River just after 2pm and Wanniang and Thongni then succumbed to death due to accidental drowning “due to presence of quicksand” in the Braimirit River, police said.
A spot inquest was conducted and no foul play was found in the deaths. The relatives of the victims requested for post-mortem exemption and this was granted by the Additional Deputy Commissioner.
