The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs organized an interactive session on the Meghalaya State Youth Policy at the State Convention Centre in the city today.
The policy is expected to be rolled out in January 2021 and will be implemented in the 2021-22 financial year.
Addressing the gathering through video conferencing after contracting Covid-19, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that the policy will act as a chance for the youth to interact with the government and also share their views and opinions in taking the state forwards.
The CM also stated that the policy reflects the government’s objectives and the youth’s interest and also incorporates various aspects including sports, education and entrepreneurship, among others. He also took the occasion to encourage the youth to give their ideas and suggestions to the government through emails, letters and various other platforms.
Commissioner and Secretary of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Vijay Kumar D, during his presentation said that Meghalaya is amongst the top states in the country with a large youth population and with 65 percent of the population of the state being under 35 years of age, the need for a Youth Policy is eminent. He also said that the policy will act as a forum for training and skilling the youth of the state.
During the event, the Meghalaya Youth Survey Portal was launched by the Chief Minister and three prominent sportspersons from the Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo Hills, namely, Jidalin Tympuin from West Khasi Hills, Batsrang Sangma from West Garo Hills and Sunday Morning Tariang from West Jaiñtia Hills were awarded with the Chief Minister’s Sportspersons of the Month award.
