The State Security Commission (SSC) today held its first meeting in three years.
“As per the law, it (the SSC) should be convened every three months,” leader of the opposition and commission member Dr Mukul Sangma said after the meeting. “Henceforth, the meeting should be convened at the interval mandated by the law.”
Another criticism of the Congress leader is that the two independent seats on the commission are vacant as the government has not appointed the members yet.
Dr Sangma wants the commission to look into the posting of police officers, a subject he has raised in opposition, as police organisation is crucial not only in maintenance of the law but also in instilling a sense of security and in administering justice by being free from outside interference.
He also expressed concern by the intelligence inputs that alluded to surrendered militants wanting to take up arms again.
“Keeping in mind the experiences we have gone through one must understand that Meghalaya from the geo-political perspective is very vulnerable,” Dr Sangma added.
He pointed out that Meghalaya has been looked at as a place for training cadres of militant outfits from other states and there is thus no room for complacency on the part of the state government.
