A demand on the need for Meghalaya to have a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has been raised again at the Anti-Drugs Campaign and AIDS in the streets of Lumshyiap village organized by the Lumshyiap Youth Association.
The need for a NCB, which is the nodal agency of the Ministry of Home Affairs, was put forth by the Editor-in-Chief of the Shillong Mail, Kyrmenlang Uriah who spoke at the meeting.
At present, the NCB has four offices in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura.
Uriah said the demand was raised in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2016 by an MLA, who is now a minister when he was in the opposition that year. “It is sad that when they are in power they forget what they have demanded,” he said.
He urged the residents that the responsibility now belongs to the people and they should raise their voices to demand the establishment of the NCB in the State.
On the other hand, the president of the Seng Samla Shnong Lumshyiap, Khrawpyrkhat Mynsong, while speaking on the occasion, informed the public about the work of the Seng Samla Shnong.
He urged the youths of the village who are still addicted to drugs to come forward and talk if they need treatment for change.
Speech was also delivered by LM Mawlong, Officer of the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) on the dangers of HIV and AIDS.
Mawlong said that there is an increase in the number of people living with HIV and AIDS despite the target of eradicating them by 2030, which is only five years away.
On the same day, a short speech was delivered by Phira Khongphai Rangbah Shnong of Lum Shyiap and Zion Marweiñ who gave testimony about his addiction to drugs.
