Shillong, May 12: Highlighting the critical role of nurses in healthcare, Civil Hospital Nongstoiñ on Tuesday observed International Nurses Day 2026 under the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
Medical Superintendent Dr. Z. Marak unveiled a portrait to mark the occasion, followed by the lighting of the lamp along with the principal, nursing superintendent, assistant nursing superintendent, nursing sisters and senior staff nurses.
GNM School of Nursing Principal E.N. Arengh highlighted the vital role of nurses in strengthening healthcare services and stressed the importance of empowering nurses to save lives and build a healthier future.
Dr. Marak, in his speech, appreciated the dedication, compassion and tireless service rendered by nurses towards patient care and community health.
In West Jaintia Hills, the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI) also celebrated the day at the District Library Auditorium in Mynthong, Jowai.
Special tribute was paid to Florence Nightingale, whose pioneering contribution laid the foundation of modern nursing.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla who attended the celebration, expressed his appreciation for the unwavering dedication of nurses, emphasising their instrumental role in delivering vital healthcare services across the district.
He urged for a broader societal recognition of nurses’ contributions, stating that their commitment and sacrifices are essential in strengthening the health sector.
Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh praised the nurses for their compassion, dedication and selfless services to humanity. He acknowledged the tireless efforts of nurses in caring for patients and supporting families during their most difficult moments and thanked them for their invaluable contribution to society and the healthcare system.
DMHO Dr. P. Shylla highlighted the indispensable role nurses play in the healthcare system, serving not just as caregivers but as the foundation of compassionate care. She described nurses as the silent strength in emergency settings and as critical support during patient emergencies.
In her keynote, Eudora Blah, Vice Principal of NEACON, Khliehtyrshi, spoke on empowering nurses through education and resources to ensure they can deliver excellent patient care and save lives, reinforcing the day’s theme.
The event included cultural performances and competitions, celebrating the dedication and passion of nursing professionals.
