Shillong, Jun 11: In a video that has gone viral, a tense situation unfolded on June 10 along the India-Bangladesh border at Nandir Char in South West Garo Hills after a 55-year-old Bangladeshi man was left stranded near the border fence for nearly 24 hours.
According to Border Security Force (BSF) officials, the man, identified as Sati Rajbanshi from Chalna village in Rajshahi district of Bangladesh, had been detained after he entered Indian territory.
During a routine pushback operation, BSF personnel attempted to return him to Bangladesh, but Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel and local residents on the other side initially refused to accept him, leading to a standoff.
The man claimed Bangladeshi citizenship and pleaded with authorities across the border to take him back.
The incident drew hundreds of people to both sides of the fence and reports indicated stone-pelting that further heightened tensions.
The BSF and BGB later held a flag meeting to resolve the matter. The situation was finally defused after the man’s family arrived, produced his Bangladeshi citizenship documents and took custody of him.
