The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sohra civil sub-division has lifted the restrictions placed under Section 144 of the CrPC given the improvement in law and order situation.
The order lifting the restrictions was passed yesterday but shared with the media today.
The trouble started on Thursday when supporters of the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate for Shella constituency, Grace Mary Kharpuri, turned violent after it emerged that she had fallen just a few hundred votes short of the incumbent Balajied Kupar Synrem of the United Democratic Party (UDP).
An erroneous report carried by a local news channel showed Kharpuri as the winner but when her supporters at the sub-divisional office saw that she was in fact the runner-up, they became violent.
The fields surrounding the office were set on fire and stones were hurled at the SDO office. Security forces deployed to maintain order had to disperse the crowd with a water cannon.
As part of the Section 144 order, the assembly of five or more persons was prohibited in the sub-division.
