Sohra holds a record 1563 mm rainfall that lashed the area since yesterday till 8:30 am today, the heaviest in India since 1995.
This was informed by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in a tweet today.
WMO also said that with 1563 mm rainfall Sohra holds the world record for the heaviest rainfall in 48 hours.
The WMO tweet was retweeted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The heaviest rainfall in the world occurred at Sohra on June 15-16, 1995 when the area received 2493 mm of rainfall in a matter of 48 hours.
This event was included in the WMO World Archive of Weather and Climate Extremes, the official international listing of weather and climate extremes.
Further, according to the WMO, Mawsynram received 1003.6 mm of rainfall since yesterday till 8:30 am today.
Past data showed that Mawsynram recorded the highest daily rain for June in the last 83 years since 1940.
Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted isolated extremely heavy rainfall also likely over Meghalaya and Assam during the period from June 17 to 19.
