Shillong, Sep 12: UDP legislator from Sohiong, Synshar Kupar Lyngdoh Thabah, on Saturday held a grassroots consultation to decide on a potential shift to the BJP.
Sources said a sizable number of supporters attended and debated whether the move was justified. Many felt joining BJP was alright but raised concerns over the proposed FCRA Amendment Act, 2026 and rules, and sought assurance that Christians are protected.
“In any case the BJP government in the centre is already committed to develop the country in general and the region and the state in particular,” sources said.
Supporters are also irked that developmental works in Sohiong are being “overseen” by NPP workers.
“Reports that we are being sidelined in our own constituency due to NPP interference are true,” sources said, adding that NPP, which leads MDA-II, is already “Team B of BJP”, so “it is only fit to join the original team.”
Meanwhile, hours after UDP’s foundation day on Friday, Sohiong UDP office bearers resigned from the party.
