Six dairy cattle were allegedly poisoned inside the shed of the Nongrwe Diary Co operative Society Ltd at Nonglwai II in Nongstoiñ under West Khasi Hills district.
Herders suspect foul play in the death of the cattle as an empty bottle of Formaldehyde Solution, a highly toxic systemic poison, was found near the carcass of one of the cattle.
According to Melansius Tympuiñ and Tynshaiñlin Kharbani, on February 14, the herders said unidentified miscreants had entered the shed but managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness. It was only the next day that the empty bottle of the poison was found, they added.
This is not the first time that cattle died in the same manner. On October 13, 2022 and January this year, cattle had fallen ill and vomited, they said.
Chairman of the society, Zacheus Tympuin said an FIR has been registered and a veterinarian has confirmed that deaths were caused by poison.
The cattle were provided to the society by the East Khasi Hills Milk Union Cooperative Society Limited through the Meghalaya Milk Mission under umbrella scheme Rashtriya Pashudhan Vikas Yojna.
