Shillong, Jun 7: A World Environment Day programme was organised on Saturday at Jathang Village by the Hima Mawphlang Multipurpose Primary Agriculture Credit Society (HMMPACS) and Earthtree, bringing together traditional leaders, students, local communities and environmental stakeholders in a collective effort towards ecological restoration and environmental stewardship.
The programme was attended by the Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang, CA Lyngdoh, along with the Myntris and Bakhraws of the Hima, representatives from four schools in Mawphlang, guides from the Sacred Groves of Hima Mawphlang, members of the Earthtree team and the villagers of Jathang.
Jathang is one of the oldest villages under Hima Mawphlang. Once a thriving settlement, it is today home to only six households. Recognising both its historical importance and future potential, Hima Mawphlang through HMMPACS has envisioned the village as a focal area for ecological restoration and the development of sustainable livelihood opportunities that can benefit future generations.
Addressing the gathering, the Lyngdoh underscored the importance of protecting and restoring the natural environment through collective community action. He reminded those present of the sacred groves preserved by the ancestors over generations, noting that these forests continue to serve as living examples of indigenous conservation practices and environmental stewardship. He expressed confidence that the initiatives being undertaken at Jathang would contribute to both environmental restoration and community well-being.
Earthtree, which works at the intersection of ecological restoration, climate resilience, and community-centred development, has partnered with Hima Mawphlang in support of this long-term vision. The organisation is committed to working alongside traditional institutions and local communities to restore landscapes while creating opportunities that strengthen rural livelihoods and local stewardship of natural resources.
Speaking during the programme, Earthtree Director Sunny Donkupar Mawiong expressed appreciation to Hima Mawphlang and the people of Jathang for their support and trust. He stated that the initiative represents more than a plantation programme; it is the beginning of a long-term partnership founded on a shared commitment to restoring ecosystems, strengthening communities and creating lasting value for future generations.
One of the highlights of the programme was a symbolic plantation activity carried out in the shape of the map of India. The initiative symbolised the aspiration to revive Jathang and build a unique and visionary future through the leadership of the Lyngdoh, Myntris and Bakhraws of Hima Mawphlang. The planted saplings stand as a living representation of renewal, growth and hope, reflecting the shared commitment of Hima Mawphlang and Earthtree towards a common vision for the future.
The participation of students from local schools further highlighted the importance of involving younger generations in conservation efforts. Their presence served as a reminder that the protection of forests, water sources, biodiversity, and traditional ecological knowledge must continue collectively if these resources are to be preserved for generations to come.
The programme concluded with renewed calls for stronger partnerships between traditional institutions, local communities and environmental organisations to advance sustainable ecological restoration and livelihood initiatives across Meghalaya. For Hima Mawphlang and Earthtree, World Environment Day 2026 marked not only a celebration of nature but also the beginning of a shared journey to restore landscapes, revitalise communities and create a resilient future.
