The fate of six candidates from Shillong parliamentary seat and four from Tura parliamentary seat will be sealed in the voting machines tomorrow when 22,26,567 voters cast their votes to elect their new Members of Parliament. The results will be declared on June 4.
Voting will begin at 7 am and conclude at 4 pm in 3512 polling stations spread across 60 Assembly constituencies of the State. The voting process will be conducted by 14,048 personnel.
Shillong Lok Sabha seat covers 36 Assembly constituencies while Tura Lok Sabha seat covers 24 Assembly segments.
Incumbent Shillong MP Vincent H Pala of the Congress is pitted against Ampareen Lyngdoh of NPP, Ricky A J Syngkon of VPP, Robertjune Kharjahrin of UDP and two independent candidates – Lakhon Kma and Peter Shallam.
For Tura seat, incumbent MP Agatha Sangma of the NPP is locked in a four-corner contest against Saleng Sangma of Congress, Zenith Sangma of Trinamool Congress and independent candidate Laben Marak.
As far as polling stations are concerned, 326 are located in urban areas while 3186 are in rural areas. 140 of these are located close to the border with Bangladesh and 187 close to the border with Assam, 36 polling stations are located in areas of difference with Assam and 128 polling stations wherein polling parties have to go through Assam to reach their destination.
There are also 88 all women managed polling stations, 60 model polling stations, 10 polling stations managed by PwDs, 1886 polling stations will have webcasting facilities, 50 polling stations are non-motorable and 762 are P-2 polling stations.
There are 133 polling stations under the mobile shadow zone. While 409 polling stations are vulnerable, 29 are critical polling stations.
40 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been deployed to ensure free and fair elections in the State.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls the overall voter turnout was 71.42 per cent. In Shillong seat the turnout was 65.48 per cent whereas in Tura seat it was 81.38 per cent.
