The office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Shella Bholaganj organised an awareness programme to promote nature conservation and reduce plastic use.
The event was attended by the Sohra Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) Mark Challam. In his address, Challam highlighted the alarming threat of plastic pollution and its devastating impact on the environment, health and natural beauty of the region. He emphasised the need for responsible plastic use, encouraging the audience to reduce single-use plastics, reuse items and properly manage waste.
Challam also stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness in public spaces and working together to build a sustainable and eco-friendly future.
The Junior Research and Development Officer (JRDO) presented a business model that showcased the economic benefits of recycling plastic waste. The model demonstrated how collected plastic waste can be sent to recycling plants and sold, contributing to both environmental conservation and economic growth.
As part of the programme, waste bins were distributed to shopkeepers to improve waste management and tree saplings were given to village dorbars to increase green cover.
The event concluded with a community cleaning drive, where villagers, officials and youth joined forces to clean public areas and raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
