The South Garo Hills deputy commissioner through various circulars to residents, government officials, NGOs among others has appealed for a more proactive role in their efforts to vaccinate the eligible population in the district as well as help in completing enrolment for Adhaar.
The district has seen most people not come forward to get vaccinated with vaccine hesitancy in the area being the worst amongst the districts in the state. Further the lack of awareness of enrolling for Adhaar has also meant that many of those eligible for schemes have had to miss out.
The appeal by the DC comes in the wake of a special campaign being organized by the district administration to push residents to complete their vaccination as well as enrol for Adhaar. The campaign will look to attain 100 per cent coverage in both the services for the district before the start of the Christmas holidays.
The DC through his appeal stated that despite the help of organizations (NGOs, Church bodies) the district is still at the bottom of the pile.
“The aim is to complete 100 per cent coverage in both services, especially Covid before the Christmas season so that the vulnerable younger generation can remain protected in the event of an impending third wave,” said the appeal by the DC.
He referred to the message by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on November 3, who had mentioned the name of the district in his interaction being the worst performer in vaccinations across the country.
“He (the PM) had mentioned in very clear terms that vaccination was the only way to protect ourselves and this has been reiterated by our chief minister during a review meeting,” he added.
Referring to the restrictions during the first wave of Covid, the DC asserted that no one wanted a similar situation to prevail.
“We don’t want to go through the same experience once again and the only way to ensure that is not repeated is to ensure we are all protected,” he stated.
The DC, through his appeal sought the proactive role of civil society in helping the district achieve cent per cent vaccination before the year end. He exhorted all people who have taken their first dose to complete the second as well in the special campaign on November 19-20.
