The income tax exemption for Khasis and other tribals has led to a large number of millionaires whose wealth is unaccounted for, senior advocate in the Meghalaya High Court, VGK Kynta, said today.
Kynta said this after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Stating that he has been raising the issue of corruption and the use of black money, Kynta said, “It is a fact that the Khasis don’t file income tax returns and, for that reason, we have so many millionaires whose wealth is unaccounted.”
He said that in order to be responsible citizens, it is high time that the people of the state file income tax returns and contribute to the nation.
Kynta explained that he has joined the BJP, his first political party, to protect the lands and minerals assets and to stand for the interest of the people of the state.
“If at any point of time the policies of the BJP goes against the Khasi-Jaintia people I will stand to say that this is not a good policy for our people,” he said. “We don’t care if other states are run by the BJP but here the BJP of Meghalaya should see that we secure our lands and our assets.”
Explaining why he picked the saffron party over others, he explained, “It has been my motto and my wish that if you want to swim, swim in a big ocean, not in small muddy ponds. I consider all the regional parties in the MDA to be political parties swimming in small muddy ponds but, at the end of the day, we have to depend on the mother in the centre, which is run by the BJP.”
