A resident of Shella has claimed that he was wantonly assaulted by a police constable and that his subsequent complaint was not accepted by Selsella police outpost.
Lekat Ch Marak, in a letter to the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, said that he had been riding his motorbike on September 30 at around 8:30pm on the Selsella-Apalgre road with his friend. At some point the duo stopped on the roadside when two vehicles, a Bolero and a Gypsy, stopped. The occupants within the Bolero were concealed from view but Marak was questioned by the voice of a woman as to what he and his friend were doing at that spot.
“Before I could respond to her, a police constable emerged from the Gypsy and brutally beat me without any apparent reason,” the complainant said, adding that he was injured in the leg during the assault. There were several other police in the Gypsy, including a “Major from the Selsella police outpost”.
His friend took Marak to the local community health centre for treatment but, when they went to the police outpost to file a complaint, the personnel there turned the complaint down and refused to register it as an FIR. Marak has thus requested the SP to take action against the erring police personnel, as alleged.
