Two suspected robbers were arrested by police today after terrorising pedestrians in a string of crimes committed around Shillong.
Following several complaints from pedestrians of being looted by two unidentified persons on a black scooty, a special team from Laitumkhrah police station led by the officer in charge, Insp Lily Nongkhlaw, along with members of the public, nabbed the two in Nongrim Hills near the North Eastern Council building.
The duo had stabbed a pedestrian with a screwdriver in the process of robbing him when they were caught at around 8:10pm.
The two suspects were identified by police as Kitbok Thabah (27) and Melvin Tongwah (22), residents of Golflink and Lumshyiap respectively.
They are thought to have been involved in at least two other robberies this year – one on April 10 near Bawri Mansion in Dhanketi where they stole Rs 19,000 and another on June 3 near Nagaland House in Nongrim Hills where they looted Rs 5,000. All three incidents (including today’s) occurred after dark.
Police also believe that they may have committed other such robberies on victims who have not reported the crimes to police. Tongwah, meanwhile, had been arrested earlier this year by personnel of Pasteur beathouse for robbing people in the Polo area.
