A 16-year-old girl with a severe case of scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine) underwent successful corrective spinal surgery at the Department of Orthopaedics in NEIGRIHMS here.
The intricate operation was performed by the surgical team led by Dr Sachlang Debbarma along with Dr Tashi G Khonglah and Dr Penthungo Ezung under the guidance and leadership of Dr Sharat Agarwal and Dr Bhaskar Borgohain, Head of the Department.
Setting an example of interdepartmental collaboration, advanced intra-operative neuro-monitoring was performed during the surgery to ensure precision and also to prevent spinal cord injury under the supervision of Dr John Lyngdoh from the Department of Physiology. Anaesthesiology and nursing staff ensured care throughout the procedure.
The girl is in stable condition and recovering well under the supervision of the nursing team with ongoing physiotherapy support, NEIGRIHMS said in a release today.
Scoliosis is characterised by progressive abnormal deformity of the spine and, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications such as chronic pain, respiratory issues and poor quality of life. Early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention are crucial in correcting spinal deformities and improving long-term outcomes. This procedure stands out as one of the first of its kind to be performed in a government medical institute in the North East, the release added.
NEIGRIHMS Director Dr Nalin Mehta appreciated the effort from the Orthopaedics Department for its significant achievement in specialised orthopaedic spine care in the region. He further added that such procedures underscore the institute’s expanding capabilities in managing complex spinal disorders through multidisciplinary collaboration and state-of-the-art surgical technology.
