Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today informed that Rs 344 crore has been sanctioned for protecting the catchments of areas of Umiew river in East Khasi Hills and Ganol in Garo Hills.
Replying to a question in the State Assembly, Sangma said the project which was funded by the World Bank was launched just last week.
“This will be a big step towards protecting Umiew and Ganol catchment areas,” he said.
The chief minister further said that the government of Meghalaya is one of the first governments to come up with a state water policy and there are multiple projects to conserve the water sources in the state.
Stating that Meghalaya is one of the few states to work closely with the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) for mapping of water sources, Sangma said that so far 50,000 springs have been mapped.
He also informed that the State government is implementing a project to develop over 400-500 water reservoirs in the State.
