In a sarcastic note, education minister Rakkam Sangma today thanked the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and the Trinamool Congress for criticising the government after it ordered closure of schools within the Shillong municipal limits on account of the Bryan Adams concert held yesterday.
Sangma said the opposition parties were trying to make their presence felt by opposing it. “If the whole population says yes, opposition has to say no. So that’s their role and they’ve made their presence felt by criticising the government for closure of schools due to a concert,” he stated.
He said he was grateful to the political parties standing by their “opposition principles” and lived up to that standard.
The education minister claimed that if one had asked around from parents or students they wouldn’t say that they were unhappy for closing the schools. It was for the convenience of the students and parents and that it was also festive season, he added.
“Classes are ongoing but now under NEP we should be multidisciplinary courses. Classes shouldn’t only be in the classroom, students should know about sports music, entrepreneurship. I’ve seen many students who secure good marks but they don’t know what’s happening around the world. So I think closing of schools, who will say no to that,” he said.
