The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought the action-taken report from the Superintendents of Police (SPs) of West Karbi Anglong and West Jaintia Hills on the complainant lodged by All India Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale regarding the Mukroh firing incident.
Gokhale in his complaint to the NHRC stated that on November 22, some local tribal natives of Meghalaya were driving in a truck near Mukroh village on the Assam Meghalaya border. It is alleged that the officials of Assam Forest Department opened fire on the vehicle and on account of that six persons including one Assam Forest Guard were killed.
The complainant alleged that the fatal incident was not only on account of an illegal abuse of force by Assam Forest guards in the territory of Meghalaya but also a grave atrocity committed against victims who were from Scheduled Tribe. He also sought the intervention of the NHRC in the matter.
The NHRC today directed its Registry to transmit the copy of complaint to the SPs of West Karbi Anglong and West Jaintia Hills calling for an action taken report within four weeks.
“It is requested that an Action Taken Report be sent to the Commission within four weeks from the date of receipt of this letter,” the NHRC said.
“The concerned authorities shall also intimate the Commission, if any notice, order etc has been received by him/them in the instant matter from the State Human Rights Commission? If yes, a copy of such order be also sent to the Commission within four weeks. Let a copy of the complaint be also transmitted to the Secretary of the concerned State Human Rights Commission, calling upon him to inform this Commission the date of cognizance, if any, taken at their end in the instant matter within four weeks,” the NHRC added.
It also ordered that the copy of the present proceeding be forwarded to the Chief Secretaries of Assam and Meghalaya for information.
