Shillong, Jun 20:  The education cell of the Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM) held a letter writing competition titled, “Voice of the Youth” at Jaintia Eastern College, Khliehriat for students to articulate their thoughts and concerns in letters addressed to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya regarding the impact of the coal ban and economic recession on their lives.

The competition was open to participants from classes 10, 11, 12, and undergraduate levels, allowing them to express their reflections in either Khasi or English.

With more than 20 students participating, the contest was monitored by college teachers, ensuring fairness throughout the process.

Speaking to reporters, JSM president Leningstar Rymbai said the initiative aimed to give students a platform to share how the ban on coal mining has affected their education and livelihoods.

“In Jaintia Hills, particularly East Jaintia Hills District, coal mining is a primary source of income. Since the mining ban in 2014, parents and families have been confronted with economic challenges, leading to a rise in student dropouts after completing SSC, HSSLC, or graduation,” he stated.

The letter writing initiative aims to ensure that the youth’s voices regarding these hardships reach the government, allowing them to articulate both their challenges and their need for sustainable solutions.

“Students and youth have the right to make the government hear the effects of the coal-mining ban,” Rymbai said.

The upcoming second session is scheduled for June 27 in Jowai, with further details to be announced. JSM intends to submit all letters to the Chief Minister, amplifying the voices of the youth even further.
