Shillong, Sep 8: Residents of Ri Muliang Block took out a protest rally at Nongstoiñ on Tuesday against the government’s move to shift the block office from Nonglang to Tynghor.
The block office at Nonglang, which covers 70 villages, was inaugurated in November 2022, just ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections.
Villagers, under the banner of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), said the government had gone back on its promise by planning to shift the office to Tynghor. They accused Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA Remington Momin of pushing the move for political reasons.
“What has been given cannot be taken away,” the villagers said, demanding that the office remain at Nonglang.
According to the JAC, the foundation stone at Nonglang was laid after due process and shifting the office now would go against the interest of the local population.
JAC leaders later met Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak and submitted a written appeal to retain the block office at Nonglang.
After the meeting, the committee held a brief gathering and warned that if the government fails to respond, the people would be compelled to take further course of action and the government would be responsible for any eventuality.
