Shillong, Oct 4: In a bid to enhance road safety, officers and staff of the Traffic branch Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi conducted vehicle checking along the national highway and also spreading road safety awareness by distributing free helmets to children.
This is the second initiative undertaken by Ri Bhoi police this year aimed to educate the public on the importance of traffic laws.
It may be noted that while parents and guardians riding two-wheelers often wear helmets, children riding as pillion passengers or standing in front are frequently left without any head protection. This exposes them to serious risk of injury or fatality in the event of an accident.
In a social media post addressed to parents, the Ri Bhoi police said, “It is good to see that most of you are wearing helmets now. But, it is shocking that you are not buying a helmet for your child. Please ensure that your kid also wears a helmet. Small precautions may save a precious life. Else, you will regret it your whole life if the child gets injured just because you did not buy a helmet for him/her.”
Meanwhile, police collected Rs. 1.33 lakh as fine from traffic violators during the check.
