With 20 lives cut short as a result of road accidents last month, Ri Bhoi police have intensified checks of vehicles, particularly along National Highway 6.
The checking was led by Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore last night. The drive was aimed not only to curb anti-social elements but also to address the rising concerns of drunken driving and over-speeding, which have led to several tragic accidents.
It has been noticed that over speeding, negligent, reckless and drunken driving etc are major contributing factors in most of the fatal accidents.
Rathore told reporters that the check drive is not limited to tackling traffic violations alone but also targets illegal activities such as drug smuggling, movement of stolen vehicles, and the illegal immigration of Bangladeshi nationals.
Rathore assured the public that such enforcement drives will continue in the coming days to ensure safety and maintain law and order in the district.
