Thousands of residents, including teachers, students, local villagers as well as leaders from various social organizations today held a protest march to demand justice for a 17-year old girl who was a victim of murder and suspected sexual assault.
Police recovered the teenager’s body on December 3 near Dimapara days after she went missing after she had gone to her school in Dalu to give her SSLC selection test on December 1.
The procession today started from Dimapara village and people walked all the way through to Dalu, where the victim studied, a distance of over 10 kms.
The principal of the school where the late victim studied, KK Paul expressed shock over what happened to his student.
“She was an extremely good student and what happened to her is shocking. This is the first such incident I have known of during my stay in Dalu. The people behind the gruesome murder and gang rape (suspected) need to be arrested immediately. I also urge parents to be extremely careful of their wards and make sure that they get to school on time and leave school accompanied by someone,” said the principal.
“These kinds of acts have to stop and the ones behind this horrific incident have to be caught and given exemplary punishment. Women have a higher stead in our Garo society and these acts have defiled our tradition. We want justice for the victim and her family,” said FR Marak, general secretary of Constitutional Rights Forum (CRF).
Meanwhile the police confirmed that no headway has been made into the case though they were thoroughly investigating the matter and were hopeful of catching those behind the horrific act.
