Migrant labourers registered under the Meghalaya Identification Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act 2020 have the freedom to work for any construction projects in the State without any obstruction.
The act is to ensure the maintenance of public order and protection and safety of migrant workers in Meghalaya through identification and mandatory registration.
Migrant workers with no valid documents have on various occasions pushed back by various pressure groups during their self-imposed checks to prevent influx.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today said, “We allow labourers from outside the state, but I would request the contractors or the construction companies to make sure all labourers obtain a labour licence,” he said, adding, “We have to strictly follow this act because it is for the safety of labourers.”
Tynsong said if any labourer comes under attack in temporary camps by miscreants, the government can act.
There have been reports of interference by certain groups on works for Shillong-Dawki road project. On this, the deputy chief minister said, “For any disturbance or hindrance that construction companies come across, they should inform the district administration.”
He said the district administrations have also been instructed to ensure safety and security of the labourers stating, “Please make sure that the labourers are safe and nobody can touch them.”
