The sudden demise of the traditional chief of Raid Nongtung, Miwel Shadap, has plunged the whole of the area into mourning.
Shadap had been one of the prominent figures fighting for the welfare of the people in the area of Ri-Bhoi that borders Assam.
Having battled health issues for over a year, Shadap (87) passed away today morning at 9 am at his residence in Umpohwin. The last rites will be conducted on Thursday from 11am.
Shadap had served the people of over 40 villages under the Raid in different capacities and had been someone who stood firm in demanding the state government of Meghalaya to take up important measures in curbing the hardships faced by the people of Raid Nongtung.
He had also been at the forefront of the demand to retain more than 30 villages of the Raid within Meghalaya during the border negotiations with Assam.
