A three-day programme to celebrate the 95th Foundation Day of ICAR and Technology Day was organised by KVK Ri-Bhoi at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, from July 16 to 18.
Seventy farmers took part in the programme.
On the very first day of the programme, Mokidul Islam of KVK Ri-Bhoi, welcomed all the participants and briefed the farmers about the role of the KVK in the dissemination of technology in the field of agriculture.
In his deliberation, he highlighted the technology developed by ICAR Research Complex, Umiam, for the benefit of the farming community. The farmers were trained on millet cultivation packages by Meghna Sarma as part of the celebration of the International Year of Millets 2023.
She explained to the farmers about the package of practices and the nutritional benefits of millets and their products. She also urged the farmers to cultivate millets in their field to reap the benefits. The farmers were recipients of quality millet seeds at the programme.
On the second day yesterday, the 188th Death Anniversary of legendary Khasi warrior and freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem was observed. Deliberations were held by the dignitaries as a part of the programme and the Director-in-charge, Sandip Ghatak, emphasised the contribution and struggle of the great warrior under the Amrit Kaal Mahotsav of India.
The concluding day was reserved for an exposure trip to the different farms of the institute to showcase technology for the benefit of the farming community, especially poultry, piggery, goatery, rabbitry and small farm implements to reduce workload.
Altogether 30 farmers showcased the technologies on scientific farming with first aid treatment, feed formulation, etc. The engineering section demonstrated the use of improved tools and implements for hill agriculture.
