Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) celebrated International Women’s Day on Friday at Pynursla, while the College of Community Science (CCS) did so at Tura.
At the latter, which was organised in collaboration with NABARD, Jyoti V Vastrad, Dean of CCS Tura welcomed the gathering. The programme was graced by Kit Miller Sangma, DDM of NABARD, as chief guest. He expressed his views on women’s equality, gender equality and opportunity for all. He also emphasised the development of women through education and skill development for sustainable livelihood.
P Das, Professor and Head and Extension Coordinator of CCS Tura, talked about women’s roles in society and inclusiveness to inspire the society through different involvement in social works. She also expresses that women are key factors through which the development of home, society and country can be made.
Various competitions were also held, like slogan writing, poem recitation, embroidery, salad dressing and flower arrangement, the winners of which received prizes.
An award of appreciation was also conferred to female entrepreneurs Crenitha M Sangma, Pecindha K Sangma. An award of recognition was conferred to Sanre G Momin, Zonal Director of Sericulture, for her involvement in the development of women through different activities in Garo Hills. Ranima Saikia and Natasha R Marak, both faculty of CCS Tura, also received awards of appreciation.
Meanwhile, the Pynursla event was graced by the presence of Latyngshain Khongmawloh, the secretary of the Village Employment Council (VEC), vice-chairman of the Integrated Village Cooperative Societies (IVCS) and entrepreneur, who was the chief guest.
A total of 50 individuals, comprising both trainees and trainers from JSS East Khasi Hills, participated in the celebration. Khongmawloh shed light on the remarkable social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women in society.
She also highlighted the government’s endeavours towards uplifting and empowering women through various opportunities such as schemes, subsidy loans and other benefits.
Furthermore, certificates were distributed to the trainees who successfully completed their training in specialised areas, including assistant dress maker, assistant hand embroidery, and beauty care assistant.
