Despite rumours that they may resign from the Assembly in the coming days, two remaining suspended Congress legislators have clarified that they would take the decision “at the right time”.
It may be mentioned that of the five suspended Congress MLAs, three have recently resigned their membership of the Assembly and joined the ruling NPP. They are Ampareen Lyngdoh (Shillong East), Mohendro Rapsang (Shillong West) and Kimfa Sidney Marbaniang (Rambrai-Jyrngam).
The remaining two – Process T. Sawkmie (Mawlai) and Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh) are biding their time.
Speaking to Highland Post today, Sawkmie said that he would quit his House membership immediately after the Election Commission declares the date of election in the State.
“I will resign after the Election Commission announces the election date for Meghalaya,” Sawkmie said.
He also said that quitting the House membership at this moment would not be politically correct and also cause unnecessary hurdles to his works as an MLA in the constituency.
“Quitting now would disable me from rendering my service to the people of my constituency. At least now I can do something to serve my people. I will resign as an MLA only after the Election Commission officially announces the date of election in the State,” Sawkmie said.
Similarly, Nongpoh MLA, Mayralborn Syiem expressed ignorance about the rumours of his resignation from the Assembly.
“I have not decided about my resignation. I will resign only at the right time,” he said.
It may be mentioned that both Sawkmie and Syiem have indicated their decision to contest the 2023 Assembly elections on UDP ticket.
Other MLAs that are soon joining the UDP are Renikton L. Tongkhar (Mawkyrwat), Shitlang Pale (Sutnga-Saipung) and Lambor Malngiang (Nongkrem).
The UDP released the first list of candidates on December 6, 2022. The list has names of 32 candidates which included seven sitting party MLAs and five sitting MDCs.
However, Sawkmie, Syiem, Tongkhar, Pale and Malngiang did not figure in the list as they have not resigned from their Assembly membership.
